The Legend of Surabaya

Hai, My lovely students.  Happy to see you again.

Today we will learn about  story again. This time about a folklore, The Legend of Surabaya.

The Legend of Surabaya

Once upon a time, there were two animals living in Kali Mas. They were a shark (Sura) and a crocodile (Baya). They were friends. They lived in harmony.  They were happy.

     They ate fish and shrimps. There were a lot of fish and shrimps in Kali Mas. Everyday Baya and Sura ate very greedily. At last, there were only a few fish and shrimps. This made them lack of food. They became hungry.

     Baya and Sura began to fight for food. But they were equally strong. None of them won the fight. Realizing this, Baya and Sura reconciled. Then they agreed to divide the river into two. Soon they made a border. Baya lived upstream and Sura lived downstream. They lived happily as before.

     The dry season came. There was only a little water in Sura’s area. But in Baya’s area water was still abundant. Then, Sura looked for food in Baya’s area. Knowing this, Baya got angry. The two animals began to fight again.

     A lot of people saw the fight. Baya was as strong as Sura. At last Baya and Sura died. Suddenly an old man said to the people. This is a rare event. To remember this event, I name this place after two animals, that is Surabaya. 

The people agreed,”Yes. Let’s name this place Surabaya.”

Moral value:

1.      1. Don’t be greedily. You must share the daily needs to the other. Otherwise GOD will punish your greedy in the next eternal living.

        2. Being cooperative is better than fight for nothing.

Artinya:

Legenda Surabaya

      Pada suatu waktu, ada dua ekor hewan hidup di Kali Mas. Mereka adalah seekor hiu (Sura) dan seekor buaya (Baya). Mereka bersahabat. Mereka hidup harmonis. Mereka bahagia.

     Mereka makan ikan dan udang. Ada banyak ikan dan udang di Kali Mas. Setiap hari, Baya dan Sura makan dengan sangat rakus. Akhirnya, ikan dan udang hanya tinggal sedikit. Hal ini membuat mereka kekurangan makanan. Mereka menjadi lapar.

     Baya dan Sura mulai  berkelahi karena makanan. Tetapi mereka sama kuat. Tidak satu pun memenangkan perkelahian itu. Menyadari hal ini, Baya dan Sura berdamai. Kemudian mereka setuju membagi sungai menjadi dua. Segera mereka membuat pembatas. Baya tinggal di hulu dan Sura tinggal di hilir. Mereka hidup bahagia seperti sedia kala.

     Musim kemarau tiba. Air di wilayah Sura sedikit. Tetapi sir di wilayah Baya masih berlimpah. Lalu Sura mulai mencari makan di daerah Baya. Mengetahui hal ini, Baya menjadi marah. Kedua hewan itu pun berkelahi lagi.

     Banyak orang yang menyaksikan perkelahian itu. Baya sekuat Sura. Akhirnya Baya dan Sura mati. Tetiba ada seorang kakek tua berkata, “Ini peristiwa langka. Untuk mengingat peristiwa ini, aku beri nama tempat ini berdasarkan kedua hewan ini, yaitu Surabaya.” 

Orang-orang setuju,” Ya, Mari kita beri nama tempat ini Surabaya.”

 

Nilai moral:

1.      1. Jangan serakah. Kamu harus mau berbag kebutuhan harianmu dengan orang lain. Jika tidak Tuhan akan menghukummu kelak di akhirat.

2.      2. Bekerja sama lebih baik daripada berkelahi memperebutkan hal yang tak penting.
